Subject Notes Until 1916 Britain continued to import food mainly from Canada and the United States. However, from 1917 Germany introduced unrestricted submarine warfare and ships carrying food were attacked and sunk. Food prices rose, along with coal which was also in short supply and a system of voluntary rationing was introduced. This was followed by compulsory rationing from February 1918 onwards.
