Name British Linen Bank
Biographical notes/Administrative history Founded as the British Linen Company Bank. 'British' was used rather than 'Scottish' to avoid any association with the 1745 uprising. Its purpose was to support the linen industry but it became a general joint-stock bank. Dropped 'Company' from name in 1905. Taken over by the Bank of Scotland in 1970 but the name survived as the merchant bank wing of Bank of Scotland.
