Description
The view appears to show the mass production of cast iron plate work in the moulding shop. The moulding boxes are stacked on the right. Moulders are filling them with greensand piled on the floor. Shovels and rammers are lying on the sand.

Plate moulding was less skilled than other moulding. The apprenticeship was about 6 months (compared to 6 years) and was paid less well. A journeyman worked 52 hours per week and was on piece rate. A foreman earned 38 shillings a week.
