Subject notes
Trustees were Alexander Marjoribanks of that ilk, John Newton of Corriehill, Alexander Russel, James Walker, merchant, Falkirk, Thomas Johnston and John Rankine.
Thomas Rankine was a beneficiary of Thomas Mair.
Affidavit as to the unknown whereabouts of Thomas Rankine by James Boyd Coubrough, commander of the ship, Portland, at present in the port of Greenock, a schoolfellow of Thomas. He remembers when Thomas was a common sailor on board the Victory or Victoria of Halifax. He did not know whether Thomas sailed on the Victory to Cadiz but he remembers hearing that the Victory was lost on that voyage. William Corbet of Pictou told him she had not been lost but had taken on board the crew of a man of war’s ship that had been lost. He was now not sure that Thomas was dead.
William Corbet (son of Dr Corbet) in affidavit said that he had been a schoolfellow of Thomas and confirmed the story of the crew of the French man of war being taken to Havre de Grace. Thomas had said ‘’Damn them, they did not use me so well when I was among them and I shan’t write‘’ He went to Liverpool in 1822 and had not been seen since. He was addicted to drinking.
