View across the docks from the inner lock gates. Cargo ships of steam and sail are moored at the dockside. A coal loading gantry is in the far corner. A group of men, one in uniform, is by the warping capstan used for moving ships.

Bo'ness Harbour was tidal which made it inconvenient for the loading and unloading of ships. The non-tidal Dock was built in 1881 and provided 730 metres of quay wall. The dock gates were opened for the passage of ships twice a day, at high tide.
