samian; decorated (stamped)

Description
2 joining rim and 2 joining body sherds from a bowl of form 29, stamped "OFSECVND" by Secundus ii of La Graufesenque (die 8b). The upper zone is a straight wreath of trifid motifs, as on form 37 in nos 56 and 193. There are hollow rosettes in the top spaces between them. One section of the decoration has been completely wiped off, leaving an irregular surface. Presumably the bowl was sold as a second. The lower zone has a winding scroll with elongated, heart-shaped leaves in the upper concavities. Alternate lower concavities contain rows of pointed leaf-tips and striated spindles springing from central plants impressed stem-to-stem. The leaf and bird (Knorr 1919, Taf. 73, 1).
c. AD 70-85.
