The spire to the south or right belongs to the Parish Church at the Cross. The street in the centre of the photograph is Stirling Street. Parts of Herbertshire Castle dated from the 13th century. Its ownership passed from the House of Douglas, the Earls of Orkney and Linlithgow and in 1835 to William Forbes of Callendar. It was damaged in a fire in December 1914 which claimed 3 lives.
