mortarium
Description
1 body sherd in hard, orange-brown fabric with well-defined, black core extending to surface on the exterior; this is probably the result of being reduced for most of the firing; moderate and random, ill-sorted, rounded quartz inclusions. There are traces of cream slip. The largish to medium-sized trituration grits include a wide suite of quartzes and sandstones, quartz sandstone and other rocks. Heavily worn. The trituration grit is closely similar to that in the mortarium of the potter EM[I?..] found earlier at Carriden (Bailey 1997, p587, no. 9) though the fabric differs; it could well be from the same workshop at perhaps Newstead or Inveresk.
