samian; decorated (rivet)

Description
A body sherd of a small bowl of form 37, CG (2008-7-111). Ovolo with star tongue, then a wavy line and double festoons. One festoon contains a small, well-endowed, naked 'warrior' with a Phrygian hat advancing with spear held horizontally. The small warrior is probably O.698. This is used by a number of potters including Docilis. This could be his ovolo (S&S, Fig.24, 1 =Rogers 1974, B24) and there is a bowl of very similar style illustrated by Rogers (1999, pl.39. 4). Docilis is c.125-145. The space between and below the festoons is occupied by a small double medallion containing a rosette. It is supported on either side by poorly impressed designs, probably leaves. There is then another horizontal wavy line, below which is a serrated plant placed horizontally. There is a small rivet hole on the right edge. The mould is smudged. [CE08-9.]
