Description
View of the colliery on the shores of the River Forth. The water is lapping round the base of the chimney. To the south is the engine house and the winding gear. There is a shelter midway up the structure and an elevated railway leading south.

Mining had taken place near the shores of the Forth since the 12th century, and underneath the Forth for most of that time. Going deeper or further out under the river awaited the development of powerful pumps in the 19th century. Bridgeness Colliery was owned by the Cadells of the Grange.
