voussoir

Description
Sandstone armchair voussoir with a lower flange and upper notch to receive tiles. The micaceous sandstone is from the coal measures and contains part of a fossil fern. It is broken down one side. The faces have diagonal chisel marks in two directions and the outer edge of this has subsequently been ground to produce a flat margin for close fitting of the stone in the vault. The edge has been oxidised near the top notch and blackened (stippled on illus 22). Found in the wall foundation F36.
