Description
Enamelled badge depicting St George slaying the dragon with the slogan "LEND TO DEFEND". This design is dated to the Second World War.
The National Savings Movement operated between 1916-1978. It was set up in April 1916 as the National War Savings Committee covering England and Wales with separate organisations in Ireland and Scotland. It encouraged local voluntary savings associations and introduced war savings deposits, later known as war savings certs. sold via the Post Office and Trustee Savings Bank. Its aim was to raise money for the war effort but also realised that people could save due to rises in wages. After the wars it encouraged people to keep saving to fund the recovery.
