Description
A butcher’s shop is located in the Steeple. Meat hangs in the window and cow carcasses lie against the outside wall. Three butchers, two with knives and sharpeners, stand with a lady in black. On either side is a pony and trap, one with a young butcher's boy as driver.

The trap on the right would be used for deliveries. That on the left is probably private transport for a better-off family. It was normal practice for carcases to be hung outside a butcher's shop.

Food hygiene laws became more rigorous over the 20th century. Horse-drawn transport was used for local journeys and deliveries.
