Subject notes
The women were painters and packers at the foundry. The Port Downie Iron Works operated form the 1840s to 1950. It made stoves and other light castings. Port Downie was where the Union and Forth and Clyde Canals met. The foundry used water from the Union Canal to power a hydraulic hoist.
