Description
One penny trade token from the Australian Tea Mart, Sydney (Hanks and Company). On the obverse is the inscription "AUSTRALIAN TEA MART SYDNEY" with "HANKS AND COMPY" in the centre. The reverse shows the Arms of New South Wales with "PEACE & PLENTY" above and the date of issue below. On the ribbon below the Arm is "ADVANCE AUSTRALIA". It was minted by W.J Taylor of London.

John G Hanks joined William Lloyd to open a business in 1853, they traded as the Australian Tea Mart. The partnership dissolved in 1857 when Hanks took over the business and it became Hanks & Co.

These tokens were part of a system of unofficial currency in the Australian colonies due to a currency shortage in spurred on by the gold rushes and population growth. The token were usually penny and halfpenny in value and were minted in Australia and Britain.
