Description
Halfpenny Canadian trade token issued by the Bank of Montreal. On the obverse is a view of the bank building with the words "PROVINCE OF CANADA BANK OF MONTREAL". On the reverse is a coat of arms with "CONCORDIA SALUS" with "BANK OF MONTREAL" on the ribbon and the words "BANK TOKEN / 1844 HALF PENNY".

These were minted to relieve a shortage of small coins in Lower Canada during the first half of the nineteenth century.
