Description
Halfpenny Canadian trade token. On the obverse is St George on horseback facing right slaying a dragon with a sword. With the words "BANK OF UPPER CANADA 1854" There are two roses either side of the year and the letter "R.K. & Co" which relates to Row, Kentish and Co, London through whom the order for the tokens were placed. On the reverse is the seal of Upper Canada, a crowned anchor and sword of justice crossed on a wreath of oak with the tomahawk and arrow and a pair of cornucopia below.There is also a segment of the Union Jack in the upper right hand corner and words "BANK TOKEN ONE HALFPENNY".

The Upper Bank of Canada served almost like a Central Bank for the Colony of Upper Canada and was authorised to issues coins from 1850. They supplied the firm Row, Kentish and Co to produced pieces at the Royal Mint in London but the later ones were stuck by Heaton and Sons, Birmingham. Including the 1854 and 1857 issues.
