token; trade halfpenny (John Wilkinson)
Halfpenny trade token issued by John Wilkinson Ironmaster, 1787. Decorated with a bust on the obverse and the image of a man working at a forge on the reverse.
Wilkinson issued these tokens during a time when a substitute for small change was needed. They were used to pay employees and as a form of self promotion. Wilkinson was an English industrialist who pioneered the making of cast iron and cast iron goods.
