token; trade halfpenny ( Manchester)

Production date
1793
Description
Halfpenny Manchester trade token. Decorated on the obverse with a man carrying a bale on his back. On the reverse is a the arms, crest and motto of the Duke of Bridgewater.
The bale is probably meant to represent the cotton trade of Manchester and it would have been a common sight in the city. The Duke of Bridgewater owned the canal between Worsley to Manchester (often cited as the UK's first canal) which brought coal from the Dukes mines to the city.
