altar
Description
2 large joining fragments of a Roman altar. The stone is a fine grained sandstone which has been subjected to heat turning the rear portion pink. The base and back of the altar have chisel marks and are worked flat; the two sides taper slightly from the base upwards; and the front has a deep horizontal groove at a height of 10 cm, above which is a 5 cm torus moulding terminating in a shallow groove, followed by 7 cm of the die. There is no lettering apparent on the die which is smooth. A second small stone of similar geology contains a deep horizontal groove and part of a moulding, probably comes from the same altar.
