Various theories for name : built on a potato field, or congregation were served potatoes in between the long services. Church was built in 1806 along with adjoining graveyard, for the anti-burgher congregation which had split from Erskine Church. In 1879 the congregation moved to Graham's Rd South Church and the building was sold
