matchbox holder

Description
Brass matchbox holder, possibly made in the trenches during the First World War. It consists of a stand made from a bullet, with one end split into two and welded to a holder made from a shell cartridge. This creates a clamp to hold a matchbox. The punched design commemorates the battles of Ypres, Lens, Ancre and Arras in Gothic lettering, as well as the dates 1916 and 1917.
