Subject notes
The Public Hall was opened in 1900. It comprised a large hall seating 600 and a balcony seating a further 150; a reading room, and a library. One of the first events it held was a Grand Bazaar with a hat trimming competition for the men and nail driving for the women. The upkeep of the hall proved too expensive. It fell into disrepair and was demolished in 1969.
