Six miners and a mining engineer (wearing the homburg) pose beside a Union flag in a desolate landscape. They are warmly dressed in an assortment of woollen jumpers and hats and ex-army jackets and boots.

The miners were from Bo'ness and were employed at the Bridgeness Colliery. The colliery was owned by H M Cadell who was also a member of the Spitzbergen Syndicate Ltd. Thirteen men from Bo'ness joined the expedition.
