Subject notes
The boat passing through the raised wooden bascule bridge is a puffer which carried goods between Grangemouth and Glasgow. The boat ahead of it is a heavily laden barge. Another barge can be seen loading or unloading at one of the several Smith & Wellstood wharves along this stretch of the canal. GR NS 824 800.

The bascule bridge was opened in 1900. Prior to that the only way to cross the canal was by a pend under the canal. It was replaced by a swing bridge in 1936. The Works made considerable use of the canal.
