View of a heavily-laden barge followed by a larger boat passing through the bascule bridge next to the Columbian Stove Works. An empty barge lies tied up at one of the Smith and Wellstood wharves.

Object detail
The bascule bridge was opened in 1900. Prior to that the only way to cross the canal was by a pend under the canal. It was replaced by a swing bridge in 1936. The Works made considerable use of the canal.
