brooch

Description
Roman brooch fragment comprising much of the bow and foot. It is in poor condition, with the catchplate damaged and the surface very corroded. Plain, notably humped bow with a rounded D-section; the catchplate continues as a narrow spine underneath it. The foot is decorated with a worn ring and dot motif. Too little survives to be certain of the detailed identification; the humped form resembles that of a plain headstud brooch, but it is not diagnostic. It is unlikely to be a trumpet brooch.
Found at Carriden. Few brooches are known from the site so far, making this a valuable addition to the record; the tight dating of Antonine sites in Scotland means that every fragment is useful in building a picture of the brooches in use in the mid second century.
