In 1865 Mr Merry, partner in Merry and Cunningham stood for election (as an Independent?) and beat Sir Frederick James Halliday of Ewell, Surrey, by 204 votes (out of c1800) Halliday had fought in the Indian Mutiny and was Lt-Gov of Bengal.

Merry held the seat until 1874. Lost at an earlier attempt because of bribery allegations
