figurine; bronze

Description
Copper alloy terminal in the shape of a lion's head - Roman. Possibly a furniture mount. The head is cast with subsequent chip carving.
This item was found to the south of the Roman fort at Castlecary near to the old quarry described in the 1901 excavation report. The quarry may have been a head-reservoir for an aqueduct leading into the south gate of the fort. The finds could therefore relate to a temple, or may have been religious offerings.
Lion-head mounts are often associated with wooden boxes used as containers for cremated bone, reflecting a wider association of such images with funerary monuments (cf 2 mounts from Wing, Bucks in Britannia 44, 362-3)
