Subject notes
The Charlotte Dundas was designed by William Symington and built at Grangemouth. In 1803 she towed two loaded ships along the Forth and Clyde Canal from Castlecary to Port Dundas, against a strong wind, making her the first working steamship in the world. However, concern over the wash led to a ban until 1828.
