Stage IIa extensions consisted of the extension of North Finishing Dept., the construction of No 8 Cold Strip Mill and the New Hot Line which consisted a new three stand hot strip mill and a modified, widened No 3 Break Down Mill. No 8 Cold Strip Mill was a new state of the art mill which was eventually to replace No 1 to 5 Cold Strip mills. It was built using the mill housings from No 5 Strip Mill. (The same housings which had originally fallen into the river at Boroughbridge.) To prevent any disruptions to production the new ingoing and outgoing equipment was installed at No 8 Cold Strip Mill first and when No 5 Cold Strip mill closed the mill housings were taken from there and slotted into their new position.
