The first British Aluminium smelter was opened at Foyers, Inverness-shire in 1896. Lord Kelvin was instrumental to the design, construction and the development of the processes used at the Foyers Plant. He joined the Board of Directors of the company in 1898 and continued as a member until his death in 1907.
