button
Description
A small cast pewter button decorated with a crown and heart motif. This consists of a hachured arched crown with a central cross above two hearts. On the rear of the button there is a casting seam and integral loop. The loophole contains iron residue.
Found by a metal detectorist near Airth.
The use of ‘crowned hearts’ or ‘sacred hearts’ are known from medieval contexts and are recognized as having religious connotations as symbols representing the Virgin Mary and the love of Christ.
The ‘crown and heart’ motif as represented in this object has been associated with the marriage of Charles II to Catherine of Braganza in 1662. The wearing of the button would therefore be a visual expression of the individual’s political and religious sympathies. Such buttons are rare and are made of silver.
