Sites and Monument Record: Polmonthill Shell Midden (SMR 178)

A mound measuring 23m north to south and 154m east to west. 1m in height. Contained oblique streaks of shells at various levels. Also contained a large pit,c10ft square, the natural clay at the bottom of which had been reddened by heat. There was also 6 inches of red ash above the pit, a layer of flat burnt stones and 1ft of black soot and lime. The pit is believed to date later than the shell heap.The midden was possibly destroyed in 1940.
