Sites and Monument Record: Larbert House (SMR 234)

Description
Georgian mansion set in landscaped grounds. Lake to the E, paths and haha to W. The house presents two large bow-fronted bay-windows to the E. A Victorian entrance tower has been added in front of the original entrance. Centre part c 1820 by David Hamilton, with considerable Victorian additions, including large and ornate conservatory. Porte cochere with 4 doric columns. Square tower above entry with much ornate carving contained in a segmented pediment. Bowed walls on either side, some with windows inserted. 2 storey in ashlar.
Where the main drive to the house crosses the path from the stables to the pond is a wide bridge or tunnel. It has large ashlar masonry to the walls with a brick arch. It was evidently designed to allow the passage of workmen and horses without their being seen by the gentry visiting the house.
