Subject notes
Four workers stand beside machinery in a corrugated iron shed. Behind them is a machine built largely of wood and powered by belts operating on two wheels. The machine may be for sorting coal. Pithead buildings were often of a temporary nature as the life of many mines was only 10 to 20 years. Miners' housing was often not built to last either.
