Description
The present house contains a plain 18th century predecessor. It was considerably extended and embellished in the early 19th century in "Gothic" style with turrets and battlements and drip moulds over the windows. It was then named "Clerkston" and has subsequently been renamed "Avondale".

Site history notes
Formerly known as Clerkston. The lands are included in a feu charter of 1542 when the Duke of Chattlherault acquired the Barony of Abbotskerse. Shortly thereafter it was subfeud to the Burn family and stayed in their possession until c1734. James Logan, a famous 19th century explorer of Canada came from Clerkston.
At the time of the OS Name Book GJ Murray Menzies was the proprietor in residence. In 1922 it was owned by the Salvesen family. During the Second World War it was requisitioned for the RAF at the nearby airfield. The summerhouse beside the pond was used as a makeshift morgue.
