Sites and Monument Record: Bo'ness Parish Church (SMR 284)

Description
New church built 1885-8 in Panbrae Rd. Large Gothic building with Normandy details constructed of snecked squared rubble with ashlar dressings using local stone.
Cruciform in plan with additional stair projections
flanking the tower at the N end. A 4 bay nave with
aisles has a four stage tower with facetted spire at N
end. At the foot of the tower is a deeply recessed
entrance with pointed head and nook shafts. The 2nd
stage has paired lancets, 3rd has 3 tall lancets, 4th
has 2 belfry openings. There are angle pinnacles
beside the spire which has lucarnes on alternate
faces. There are also lancets to the aisles and the
lower level of the transepts. The gallery has 3-light
geometric traceried windows. There is a galleried
interior with 3 lofts, the Laird's Loft under the
tower, the Mariner's Loft in the W transept, and the
Miner's Loft in the E. The timber roof springs from
corbelled shafts supported on alternating round and
octagonal columns.
