Sites and Monument Record: Little Kerse Temporary Camp (SMR 321)
Description
Situated immediately W of the Gilston or Millhall Burn and the Millhall Reservoir, 0.4 km S of the Antonine Wall. No visible remains on the ground. Aerial photographs by St Joseph have revealed almost the complete outline of the camp in the form of crop-marks. E, S and W sides were shown, and each side was furnished by an entrance and a titulus, but the central part of the N side was lost in a spreading dark patch. The course of the ditch was located by probing, and the resulting survey showed that the camp was rectangular on plan, and measured 152 m in length from N to S, by 143 m traversely. An annexe was found to encompass a knoll rising 7.6-9 m in height, and was attached to the SE part of the camp. The annexe appears to have no other entrance than that near the S gateway of the camp. Disregarding the annexe, the camp's area is 2.2ha. Excavations in 1963 located the SE and SW turns of the ditch, and also uncovered a cemetery area occupied by eight long cists, four of which were stone-built. One of these contained a re-used dressed stone, presumably derived from a Roman context.
The site is now occupied by Grangemouth Golf Course, but the south side of the annexe and the south-west angle of the main camp have been removed by the construction of the M9 motorway.
