Site history notes
Large warehouse built in 1772, mainly for tobacco being transferred from Glasgow to northern Europe. It was converted into flatted accommodation in 1980 as part of the first town centre rehabilitation project that started in February 1978 and ended in April 1981. The sarking was entirely replaced and the roof re-slated with Scotch slates laid on felt. The rainwater disposal system was renewed and the chimneys rebuilt to their original height. Lime harl pointing. The eastmost window on the N side, 1st floor, was restored to its original dimensions. The cast iron turnbuckles were retained. The 4-pane fixed windows formed by two crossed stout timbers were used as the basis for new sash and case windows for the upper floor flats. The windows had plain shutters made of thin pine boards. The original stair consisted of stone winders set in an oval plan - the inner ends forming a short wall or newel (as in a wheel stair). Pine pillars between floors. The roof consisted of trusses and wide centres, the raking members being held by collars at mid-point and ties just above the wallhead level; between them stout purlins were housed into the raking members.
