Sites and Monument Record: Second Battle of Falkirk Monument (SMR 403)
Description
Located on the west side of the Bantaskine Estate on the Greenbank Rd. It thus stands at the point where the left wing of the Jacobite army assembled at the commencement of the battle.
The monument consists of a massive column surmounted by a graceful finial standing 23 ft high with a flight of steps at the base. Column and base are made of "concrete blocks" (probably reformed stone) made by David McNair, plasterer in Falkirk. It was designed by Alexander Black of Falkirk. On the south side, facing the road, is a brass plate which reads "The battle of Falkirk was fought around here 17th January 1746." The plaque was cast in the E Department of Carron Iron Works by William Kelly of Union Rd in Camelon. Inside the base is a lead casket or time capsule.
At a later date an iron railing has been placed around the monument to protect it from vandals and traffic. There appears to have been some weathering of the blocks at the edges and so, at some unknown date, a skin of cement was used to encapsulate it. No keying was provided on the original surface and consequently this weather overcoat falls off periodically. It was touched up in 1994.
