Sites and Monument Record: Denny Parish Church (SMR 424)

Description
Hall type church building with a square tower on the east gable. This is capped with a small spire and masonry corner pinnacles. The upper storey presents two louvred lancet openings to each face. Below a string course which provides the location of an offset, are three clock faces. A later six sided chancel has been added to the east side of the tower at ground floor level.

Site history notes
Denny church is first documented in 1619, however, Timothy Pont shows what appears to be a well established two storey church, there (c1590). Denny kirk lay in Temple-Denny with its strong Hospitaller presence. Denny was created a parish in 1641 but the church had an appointed minister operating there in 1630: ‘Mr Alexander Callendar, minister at Temple of Dennie’. (RS58/5 f.111).
