Site history notes
The original Cross Well was erected in 1681 by the Earl of Callendar. It stood in front of the present site of Wilson's Buildings. In 1817 it was moved to a site just in front of the Steeple at the behest of the Road Trustees.
In 1989, after the High Street was pedestrianised, a lorry backed into the monument and it had to be dismantled for safety reasons. In 1993 it was finally reinstated, but was located near its original position on the south side of the street.
