Sites and Monument Record: Rough Castle altar (SMR 523)

Description
A Roman altar was found in 1843 between 200 and 300 yds to the S of the fort. It is now in the National Museum. A quern was found alongside it, and some copper coins, 2ft under the surface. The moorland was being reclaimed and the objects were found with a plough. A stone lined cist was found south of the fort in the excavations of 1902, and an annotated plan by Mungo Buchanan shows the road from the S gate leading to this. The altar probably came from the field to the west of this.
