Sites and Monument Record: Rough Castle field System (SMR 527)
Description
A series of small enclosures demarcated by low earthern banks. These look like Celtic fields, excavation and survey undertaken by the Royal Commission is still unpublished. A C-14 date suggests a Bronze Age date for the underlying ground surface, but it has also been suggested that the fields may be connected with the Roman camp, an idea given added weight by the presence as an integral part of the field system of a road which is aligned on the E side of the fort. It is even possible that they served the 18th century Trysts.
