The site was opened in 1889 as a coal mine under the ownership of James Campbell. In 1892 Campbell & Co began making bricks, and two years later A. Towers became a principal partner in the firm. Alexander Campbell & Co was formed in 1897. In 1916 the partners were Robert Campbell and Thomas Howie.In 1927 Campbell allowed the other partners to buy him out and by 1947 the firm was a limited company. In 1965 the works were sold to Dougall & Son. Then in 1970 it became part of Dyson Refactories, though brick production ceased in 1964 the mine was retained.
