Sites and Monument Record: Hatherley (SMR 573)

Description
Large villa of arts and crafts/art nouveau design. Symmetrical S front, 3-storey, 3-window topless central tower; 2-storey 2-window either side. Asymmetrical N side with single storey office court in front. Harled, stone dressings, very simple treatment. Interesting interior.
Designed by Thomas M Copland and completed in 1904 for William J Gibson. Gibson was the owner of the Salton Foundry and an architect himself. He was the chief architect of the Falkirk Royal Infirmary and seems to have played a significant part in the design of the Hatherley. The theme is distinctly arts and crafts, with an individual charm.
The house is located on Arnot Hill with a large walled garden sloping to the south. It was split down the middle to provide two homes, one for William Gibson and his wife, and one for his mother and two elderly aunts. Accommodation in the central battlemented tower, which gives the house distinction, was shared between these two houses.
The windows have stone dressings and the metal casements are set directly into the stone reveals. The porch on the eastern block has curving, branch-like timber supports. Inside details abound. The stairwell has spindle banister with heart-shaped fretwork. Fire surround ingle nook.
