Sites and Monument Record: Bo'ness War Memorial (SMR 588)

Description
Located at the junction of Church Wynd and Stewart Ave, on the steep N facing hill overlooking the Forth. It consists of a pedestal and shaft, the latter rising 27 ft. On the shaft are several bronze reliefs, a sword on the N side with a lion on a plaque set within a wreath; and a sailing ship on a similar plaque on the S face.

Site history notes
The architect commissioned for the War Memorial was George Simpson Barr (1891 - 1973) - of Galt and Barr, Glasgow. ( Previously he had designed the War Memorial at Dunoon.) The Bo'ness War Memorial was unveiled by Lieutenant General Sir Walter P. Braithwaite, KCB (1865 - 1945). The ceremony was held Saturday 12th July 1924. The Guard of Honour was formed by buglers and pipers of the 1st Battalion, the King's own Scottish Borders. Employees of public works, residents and Bo'nessians who no longer lived there, subscribed to this work and amounted to £1347, 16s, 7d. expenses were £1342. 4/-, which left as balance of £5,12s.7d, which was donated to the Bo'ness, Carriden and Kinneil Nursing Association. Provost David Lumsden, in September 1947, unveiled two plaques to those who were killed or died of their wounds in the Second World War - 95 servicemen and 22 merchant seamen.
