Site history notes
The part of Avonbridge lying north of the River Avon was part of the barony of Ballenbreich and so the mill also takes this name. It is also known as Haining Mill.
Ballenbreich Mill appears in 1604 in a charter relating to the barony of Haining. In 1611 it is listed in the will of Robert Rob and his family long maintined a connection with it. As late as 1738, for example, John Robert is designated as "milner in Hainings Miln". The earliest reference to it was Haining Mill comes from 1673.
The 1st ed OS lists it as a lint mill and a pond between it and the river may have been used to steep the flax.
Latterly it was run by J & A Waugh processing cattle feed and became known as "the grain mill". Milling ceased in 1935, after which the buildings were used for storage. Demolished before 1980.
