Site history notes
In 1783 the lands & house of Thornhill were in the possession of William Greig. He disposed of them in 1800 to George M'Callum, a retired naval surgeon. In 1821 he sold them to Alexander Macfarlane, an Alloa banker and son of a shipowner. It was he that had the new house erected in 1851-2. Alexander's son, Major Robert Macfarlane sold the house and grounds to George Adinston M'Laren in 1869. He was provost of Edinburgh, and only spent the summer months in Falkirk. On his death in 1881 the estate fell to his nephew, James Sceales, wine merchant in Leith. He died at Thornhill House in Oct 1906, and was succeeded by his son George Adinston M'Laren Sceales. With an active military career he let the house to tenants.
