Sites and Monument Record: Almond Iron Works (SMR 672)

Description
The site is now covered with large quantities of waste from Manuel Brickworks. This has buried all of the buildings, though the upper part of one protrudes through it at NS 9612 7632 . This is a well constructed stone building with coursed masonry and a large cavetto mounded eaves course. A large arch on the east side has a broad raised band with "1854" on the keystone. The keystone has dropped slightly. The high quality of the masonry and the size of the eaves course suggest that this was a very substantial building and it may well stand to two or three stories in height. It overlooks the railways and the Union Canal and is shown on the 1st ed OS maps. It is probably the engine house.
